Why Is Tea Associated With The British?

Why Is Tea Associated With The British?
Tea has become the most common drink of the British and even more appreciated than Coffee. The first tea came into Europe in 1610 on Dutch ships. In 1658 the first Tea related advertisement featured in a London newspaper.

Imports - Tea had been imported to Portugal by their trade merchants in Japan and China. Catherine of Braganza, Charles II’s second Portuguese queen, pioneered the act of drinking tea that broadened rapidly and reached all the way through the country and to the English.

In 1750, Tea gradually became a drink of the high society in Britain as surprisingly, during those times the cheapest tea was more than one-third of the cost of a laborer’s wage. Tea, originally a discovery of China was introduced to India and from there the trade came to England. It is also said that explorers like Marco Polo brought the tea culture of the Indian Royals to Britain.
Tea became so popular that Fernand Braudel, a historian and writer questioned, "Whether it was true that Tea replaced gin as the new drink in England?” By 1766, "tea fleets" were ever-growing and proving invaluable to the British and other Europeans, not only because it was easily cultivated, but also because it was easily prepared.

Afternoon Tea concept - Afternoon Tea was made famous around 1800 by the Duchess of Bedford, Anna Russel, to kill the huger pangs between lunch and dinner. It was an afternoon break and a light meal. Gradually, tea drinking developed into a classy sociable ceremony. Tea gardens were established where couples could take a stroll in the afternoon and have tea with cakes, bread and butter. Tea parties became popular with the then high class society. Soon after, with trade flourishing, tea became even more popular and available to the masses.

Industrial Revolution - Some historians suggest that tea played an important role in the British Industrial Revolution. Due to the stimulants present in tea it turned into an afternoon custom accompanied with sugary snacks amongst the workers, which improved their efficiency and the working hours of the workers; this energized their capacity to work late hours.

Protest - Tea also became a topic of protest while America was still a part of Britain. Britain imposed high taxes on tea so when colonists decided to take revenge, they entered the docked ship of British East India Company and dumped all of the tea in water, an incident that famously because known as ‘The Boston Tea Party’.

Tea in Britain was traditionally brewed in a China teapot using freshly boiled water and the tea leaves were left for a few minutes. For the sweet tooth, some milk and little sugar were added to give extra flavour. Over a period of time Tea made its mark on the British and became a part of its Royal culture, spreading all over the country. Today it is still considered one of the most highly consumed beverages of the British.

The Best Alternatives to Coffee

The Best Alternatives to Coffee

If you're one of those millions of people who can't get started in the morning without that first cup of coffee, you should be aware of some other drink alternatives that you may enjoy even more. Coffee is such a popular drink, yes, it's true. However, coffee can become a habit, and the caffeine will jump start your day, but is this the right way to do it?

Okay, just because there are other drink alternatives to coffee doesn't really mean you have to give up the aroma and taste of those coffee beans. It simply means that you should try some other drinks once in a while. Who knows? You may really love one of those other drinks even better than coffee!
One good drink to have instead of coffee is green tea. You've heard lots about this tea and it's all true. You can actually brew green tea, it still has some caffeine but a lot less. You also won't get those jitters that you may get from your coffee. It is also healthy with its' antioxidants and strong disease fighters to help keep you from getting sick. It tastes good, too.

Another type of tea that you may enjoy is licorice tea. This tea is caffeine-free, very bold, and good-tasting with its' spicy and sweet combination. Licorice can actually increase your energy even though it is caffeine-free since it's consider to be an adrenal tonic. This type of tonic can reduce your stress levels.

If you're one of those who also loves coffee in the afternoon, a smart alternative is one of those cool, refreshing smoothies that also contains some nuts. You can use cashew milk, nut butter and protein powder to raise your blood sugar. This is the energy boost that will keep you going for the rest of the day.

Nuts are also very healthy for you and also have the benefits of fiber and the protein.
Another great afternoon drink, or even a good drink in the morning, is a cup of hot chai. Chai is a combination of milk, spices such as ginger and cinnamon, and of course the black tea that is very rich. The caffeine level in chai is quite low. Even though this is still a type of tea, it has a creamy and smooth taste and texture that will remind you very much of that coffee that you still crave and love.

By just trying one or two of these alternatives, you may feel better, be healthier, and also treat your taste buds with something different.

When Will Your Stored Food Go Bad?

When Will Your Stored Food Go Bad?
When there’s a sale on foods you eat, you may love to stock up on them. You’ll fill your pantry, freezer, and fridge with items when they’re at their best price, and then you can avoid paying full retail when you suddenly need them in the future. It’s a great practice, and in theory it works well for most things.

You probably don’t, however, buy ten gallons of milk at once because you know you’ll never be able to drink that much before it turns sour. But if you think shelf-stable products and things stored in your freezer will keep indefinitely, you’re wrong. Everything you store will eventually go bad, and some sooner than others. So how do you know when to stock up, eat it, or toss it? Here are some guidelines.

Frozen Meat and Poultry

Meat and poultry are some of the most expensive grocery items to purchase. There are hardly ever any coupons for them, so when there’s a good sale, people stock their freezers. You probably don’t have unlimited freezer space, but either way you shouldn’t buy more meat or poultry than you can eat in nine to twelve months, because that’s how long they’ll last when frozen.

After you make your purchases, you should put poultry into the freezer within one to three days, and meat in the freezer within three to five days. Make sure you wrap them well, or they can get freezer burn. Freezer burn won’t make them go bad sooner, but it will affect their taste.

Canned Goods

If you’re preparing for a natural disaster or the end of the world, what do you stock up on? Canned goods, because they will stay good for the longest amount of time and don’t require refrigeration. Canned goods will last longer than all your other stored foods, but they don’t last forever, either. Most canned goods like vegetables can last anywhere from two to five years. Canned goods that are acidic, like fruit or tomatoes, will last for about one to one-and-a-half years. Make sure to store them in the dark for maximum freshness, because light can increase deterioration.

Bottled Beverages

Is there a sale on soda or bottled water? Bottled water can last indefinitely if it hasn’t been opened, but it’s best to use it within two years. Soda and other bottled juices can be safely stored unopened for about three months before the quality begins to deteriorate. While they may be good for a bit longer, their color or taste may begin to change – they’re still safe, just markedly less appealing.

Snacks and Packaged Foods

There are varying guidelines for your snacks and packaged foods. They may have expiration dates, but potato chips generally last for one month past it, and crackers and pretzels for three months past the expiration date. The preservatives keep them lasting longer. Boxed pasta should be used within a year of purchasing it. Some items, like store-bought bread, will last longer if you put them in the fridge instead of the pantry (one to two weeks for the bread).
