After releasing the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, Google decided to disclose its source code to Android Open Source Project (AOSP) for mass downloads. Jelly bean updates may not be available for smartphones any sooner. However, Android 4.1 ROMs is expected to be released by custom ROM developers, such as CyanogenMod in the near future.
Google Releases Source Code to AOSP
Google’s open source expert, Jean-Baptiste Queru, announced that the company has handed over Android 4.1’s source code to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) tree. He also announced the release of Jelly Bean’s binaries for Verizon Galaxy Nexus (toro), Samsung Galaxy Nexus GSM (maguro) as well as for Google Nexus 7 tablet (grouper), while the binaries for the Nexus S and Motorola Xoom will follow shortly. This is to make sure that full ROMs for the mentioned devices will arrive soon, while the other devices would have to wait for months before the official Android 4.1 Jelly Bean becomes available.
Android 4.1 on New Devices?
Top device manufacturers, such as HTC, Samsung, Motorola, Sony and LG didn’t mention anything on when the update will arrive to their respective Android devices. LG, however, did confirmed that they are still having a hard time installing Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich on their current devices and don’t have time for even rolling out Android 4.0 Jelly Bean.
This may also be the case of other device manufacturers. Some of Motorola’s latest devices, such as the Droid Razr and Razr Maxx, have just recently received an Android 4.0 update, while Samsung has just rolled out Android 4.0 for the Galaxy Note. Lastly, Sony is about to include many of its devices on the Ice Cream Sandwich update list.
ICS’s Current Status
Since Android 4.0 ICS runs on about 10 percent of Android device only, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread is still the most widely used mobile OS in the market, Android device manufacturers would have to hold Android 4.1 updates for the time being. Judging by the present update behaviors, perhaps none of these devices would get Android 4.1 within 2012.
Nonetheless, custom ROM developers would still continue on working on the Jelly Bean project. In fact, the people at CyanogenMod have already begun with this project. Moreover, CM10 Nightly builds is believed to appear on CyanogenMod Web site in just 2 months.
For now, Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S2 have already received the first Android 4.1 custom ROM update. A few other devices have also received Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update, while the rest would have to run Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
