Stress and teens

Today’s world is full of competition; be it in education systems – for getting better grades, in jobs for getting promotion, in marital relations, etc. all this involves stress. People have become a victim to stress - just like a lion that does not let go of its prey; stress in similar way does not let people come over it easily. Stress in open arms has embraced all; be it children, teens or adults - all experience stress. However, it has been shown than the teens are more affected by stress and something needs to be done to help them as they have a long way to go...
A teen can be under stress full state due to variety of reasons. These can be loss of friend or loved one, pressure of studies, peer pressure, pressure to be on the ranker’s list, difficulties at home, problems at school, being teased or bullied, etc. Stress can lead to many behavioral problems in the future and this can result in lack of self confidence and the child may then go into depression. Other symptoms of stress may include anxiety, poor appetite, loss of interest in any activity, headaches, drug use, insomnia, mood swings and temper tantrums.
The child or the teen under stress will show no interest at all in studies or hobbies and will stay aloof from family and friends. They will be absolutely unaware of what is happening around them.
Stress needs to be treated in time. A child under stress needs to be given urgent attention. Long term stress generates pressure on the nervous system and due to this the stress hormone are pumped out over an extended period. This in turn causes weakened immune system and the person feels tired, experiences fatigue due to depletion of body reserves. When a teen experiences such problems it is an alarming condition as this may ruin their life and may also pose problems in their career.
A teen under stress should be recognized and given appropriate counseling by the family members first. They should be encouraged to practice yoga as well as breathing exercise that would to some extent soothe the nervous system. Teach them various stress coping strategies so that they learn to cope with stress without falling prey to it.
One should understand that stress is not an immediate response to any situation or event. It is a gradual process and shapes up eventually. Thus the strategies to cope with stress should take in to account all those minor as well the major event that has taken place in the child’s life. This shall help in dealing with the child and his stress in a much better way.
Go ahead….. Fight stress and lead a stress free life….. Use stress to fight tough situations and learn to win over it and don’t let it dominate you
