Short History Of The Modern Rain Coat

Waterproof defence that stops the rain to wet our clothes and give us a cold. What is that? The right answer on this quiz question is Rain Coat. This water resistant coat or sometimes referred as jacket is worn every where around the world both from kids and adults man and women. Rain coats are made from waterproof materials like nylons, rubberised materials and the most modern ones from a material called Gore-Tex. Some fabrics that are used for producing rain coats are breathable, which allow the body sweat to evaporate and at the same time protect us from the rain and getting wet.

Raincoats come in different sizes and colour and there are some famous and favourite brands among the people who benefit from the rain coat. One of the most popular brands in the UK is the Glasgow originated brand for rain coats called Mackintosh, a brand that uses rubberised or rubber laminated materials. This company was providing rain coats to people since the 1824 and during the decades developed and produced high quality rain coats, which served very well the British nation. At the beginning of the 21st century this company made some coalitions with leading brands like Liberty, Gucchy and Louis Vuitton and the rain coats that resulted from this coalition became super popular around the world and especially among the Japanese women.

Gannex is another company that produces rain coats from a waterproof fabric named Ganex invented in the 1951 by Joseph Kagan, an invention that made him a millionaire. This brand shortly became very popular among the British nation. Ganex rain coats became fashion icons and even Queen Elizabeth and the British Prime Minister Harold Wilson loved to wear them. These rain coats were worn by explorers on Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. Himalayan climbers, British and Canadian police forces were also wearing Ganex rain coats.

The invention of Gore-Tex which as a waterproof, breathable fabric intended for rain coats, water proof jackets, trousers and other sport equipment was announced in 1976 and was invented by Robert Gore and his co-inventors Wilbert L. Gore and Rowena Taylor. Gore-Tex fabrics are typically based on polytetrafluoroethylene and other fluoropolymer products which were thermo-mechanically expanded. The simplest sort of rain coats and other rain wear is made of two layers.

The outer layer is normally nylon or polyester which gives strength. The inner one is polyurethane which provides water resistance, and at the same time breathable.
Rain coats and rain wear made form Gore-Tex as a breathable fabric should be cleaned regularly for their best performance and rain defence, because sweat and dirt obstruct the pores of the breathable material. Rubber rain coats or nylon are less durable and not breathable but they are also cheaper and do not need any cleaning because the rain will do that for you.
