Plastic Surgery - A Necessity Or Fashion

Plastic surgery is a very old technique that was performed in India some eight hundred years ago. The ancient Egyptians and the Romans also knew some techniques and were able to perform simple plastic surgeries. However plastic surgery became common only in the 20th century. Plastic surgery can be reconstructive and cosmetic. Reconstructive plastic surgery is performed to correct functional dilutions caused by traumatic injures, burns, cancer, and other diseases, infections and abnormalities. Reconstructive surgery is performed because of a disease or a health problem.

Cosmetic surgery on the other hand, is performed to improve the appearance of a person because of some aesthetic ideal. Cosmetic plastic surgery these days has reached the highest limits and the statistics state that in US, the largest cosmetic surgery market, more than twelve million surgeries are done every year and the numbers is increasing every year. Women are usually the ones that succumb to plastic surgery, but men also often pay visit to the plastic surgery clinics. The plastic surgeries that are most common are breast enlargement, buttock implant, tummy tuck, eye lid surgery, liposuction, lip enhancement, nose job, chick implants, chin implant, filler injections, etc. The list becomes longer and longer every day.

It seems that people, especially women become oppressed with looks and cosmetic surgery. The media these days pays too much attention on perfection and beauty. The competitive world of movies and videos generates tons of celebrities every year and the beauty standards and the wish to be perfect and original have reached very high levels. Many of these celebrities, especially women turn to plastic surgery in order to sustain their youthful look, or just to follow the trend of the other celebrities and prove themselves as better and more beautiful. The media and the advertisements influence people’s life on a large scale, but the oppression with the plastic surgery has more to do with psychological disorders.

Professionals claim that these psychological disorders are widely spread and play big roles in people’s life. They even risk their life in order to satisfy their hunger for beauty and perfection. These people are concerned with their looks and allow appearance to dominate their life. People try to identify themselves with the celebrities and follow the trend that they direct. Most of them are not even aware that these people, the celebrities, are different people in their normal life. Many of these celebrities even had health problems because they succumb themselves under the knife of the plastic surgery. But the normal, common people most of the time are not aware of this, since the celebrities hardly ever come out in the public and loudly tell the truth of their stories. The celebrity’s world glows only when you look at it from outside.
