Tips To Quit Smoking


It is no big secret that in order to feel healthier and live longer one needs to quit smoking.  However many people have been trying and were unsuccessful in getting over this habit.  Majority of the people find it difficult to quit smoking because of nicotine which is very addictive and hard to get rid of.  Some people are also unaware of the great health dangers caused by excessive smoking.  A large number of diseases including cancer are caused by excessive tobacco smoking. However if you have the will power and mindset, you can be successful in quitting the habit. First of all you need to learn about the dangerous effects and health risks related to smoking and then the effective steps to be taken to quit smoking. It is estimated that majority of the oral cancer cases and lung diseases like tuberculosis are caused by tobacco smoking. Avoiding tobacco also adds more years to your life.

The following tips will help you to quit smoking and help you to lead a healthier and longer life. The first step is to prepare your body and mind for quitting the habit. Even though nicotine is an addictive drug, it is not impossible to resist it. A simple way is to hide cigarettes and ash-trays out of mind and out of your sight. Deep breathing is a powerful and important technique and helps you relax during the strong cravings.  Drinking lots of water helps to flush out nicotine and other toxins from the body.  Limit the intake of caffeine and alcohol as these act as stimulants for smoking. You can take in low calorie foods like fruits or an oral substitute like chewing gum and cinnamon sticks. Exercising for about 10 to 20 minutes a day and practicing relaxation technique like yoga can also significantly help people quit smoking. You could ask for support from family members or your friends to help you quit by requesting them not to smoke in front of you. You could also set a stop date and make proper plans to adhere to it.

When the craving hits you, try to do something else which diverts your attention. For example, if you have a habit of smoking after meals, get up from the table soon after food and go out for a walk or drive. Or if you smoke while you drive, you could listen to your favorite radio program or music. You could also find new habits or hobbies that require using your hands like crossword puzzles, gardening or doing house chores. Make sure you eat a well balanced diet that is less fatty. Have low calorie and healthy snacks like fresh fruits and vegetables, juices and low fat cheese.

Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do to improve your health.  The effects are immediate and your health will get better day by day.  It will reduce the chances of heart ailments and cancer. As a result you will not only enjoy good health but also reap social and financial benefits.
