The history of coffee – facts and legends


According to the legend, the coffee power was discovered by a shepherd named Kaldi. He noticed that when his goats eat leaves and fruits of a certain tree they became unruly and don’t sleep at night. Not long after the story was spread and the monks from the Ethiopian church began to prepare the drink from the fruits of this coffee trees and use it when they feel tired during the long and grueling religious ceremonies. The first European who had coffee beans were the Dutchmen and the Frenchmen. The sticks of this magical coffee tree were a personal gift to King Louis XIV from the sultan of Yemen as a sign of gratitude because the French royal doctor managed to cure his ear. By this time arose the dispute what is more healthy the tea or the coffee. Therefore, the Swedish King Gustav III decided to do an experiment with two twins sentenced to death. Every day, one drink coffee and the other drink tea. The experiment was supervised by two professors. According to the story, these professors were killed by mercenaries, and the twins lived to a ripe old age.
In Columbia people believe that coffee gives divine power. Muslim pilgrims in Mecca called coffee “Islamic wine, which purifies the body and spirit”. For them coffee is “medicine against arrogance, cold and headache.” Initially, coffee was used with curative intent in weakness, fatigue and headache. In the world there are many varieties of coffee with different taste, odor, density and strength.
In the Islamic world the most widespread coffee is Turkish coffee. It is strong, sweetened with a lot of sugar and served with a glass of water to freshen the mouth before sip. After drinking coffee in the bottom remain sediments. Usually people turn the cup off to the cup plate and then guessing at figures which the coffee sediments shaped.
And here are a few facts about coffee:
First coffee shop in Europe was opened in Venice in 1645, which is still working and is among the most famous coffee bars in Italy – “Café Florien”. In 1948, the Italian master of coffee Ashil Gadjia invented the first coffee machine for espresso, which caused a revolution in coffee making. Experts have proven that coffee makes us more cheerful and stimulates brain activity, improve the metabolism, prevent premature aging and reduces the risk of heart attack. Naturally, if you drink 6-7 cups of coffee every day it could cause heart palpitation, nervousness, and irritation of the stomach. The truth is that millions of people on the ground start their day with a cup of coffee. Hundreds of people around the world dedicate their lives to studying the history of coffee, its types and methods of preparation. There are annual competitions for the best coffee specialists called “barista”.
