Bananas and Depression


Millions of people worldwide suffer from depression and keep looking for various anti depressant drugs for its cure. However, anti depressant drugs do harm you in the long run. Then, why not try and look out at remedies from the nature itself…. Aren’t all of us aware of the famous saying ‘An apple a day keeps a doctor away’…. Now lets change this a bit….How about ‘Eat banana a day and drive depression away’….
Yes, this is very much true…. Banana does help in reducing as well as curing depression. Depression occurs due to lack of serotonin, which is also known as the ‘happy hormone’. Serotonin deficiency occurs because of lack of the amino acid tryptophan. Our body is incapable of producing tryptophan. Therefore, we need to have diet that supplies tryptophan.  This essential amino acid ‘Tryptophan’ helps the body to make serotonin. Serotonin is a brain chemical that regulates our mood. Apart from containing tryptophan, bananas also contain vitamin B6 which is required by our body to produce serotonin from tryptophan.  So, if you are under depression, try eating a banana and notice your mood change in minutes. Many researchers have found that eating two bananas for three days increases the serotonin levels.
All you have to do is try the following simple steps:
  1. Banana peel can also be helpful to reduce depression as the peel contains dopamine. Do this - peel the banana and cut it into small pieces.mix it wit juice, milk or other fruits of your choice. You can even blend it with a little ice to make it soft.
  2. Another alternative of having the peel is by boiling it and drinking the water. You can also put it through the fruit juicer and drink the juice; this shall also help to ease the depression. Have this banana peel juice once a day in the evening.
  3. Make habit of eating bananas throughout the week to relieve your depression. Eat them for a month and notice the difference in the aches and pains that come along with depression.
  4. Another option is this – take a few bananas, cut them into small pieces and drip some honey over it. Have this regularly every morning.
  5. Carry some bananas at work place with you. Whenever you feel stressed out or you begin to feel depressed, then take a break and have a banana.

So go ahead…. Eat bananas…. Treat depression… and live a healthy life…
