Nights in Rodanthe is a movie of character; a rare and beyond reviewing movie. Analyzing a movie like Nights in Rodanthe is just like defining a feeling that fades away as you try to define it. Nights in Rodanthe is a movie meant for sentimental movie lovers. Nights in Rodanthe is a gives off a picture of a classic love story, with an intellectual depth to it.
Rodanthe is a small island town, at Dare County, on the outer bank of North Carolina. The town is very scenic and pictographic. Rodanthe is a perfect place for two exhausted-of-life middle-aged souls; hence, the setting plays a momentous role in the film.
The drama revolves around Diane Lane and Richard Gere. Adrienne Willis, performed by Diane Lane, is frayed single mother with two demanding kids; a rebellious teenage daughter and a younger son. Adrienne’s husband has been involved with other women and hence they’re living separately. Kids, especially, teenage daughter has been a work for Adrienne lately, as she has started blaming her mother for everything wrong in their life.
To slip out of this tedious routine, Adrienne’s happy-go-lucky friend calls her over at her hotel in North Carolina. It’s an off season and the friend is going away on a trip and needs someone to look after the hotel, while, Adrienne wants some time alone to get herself together. The hotel is set on a beach-side. As Adrienne is leaving for Rodanthe, her husband comes to pick up the kids and also expresses his desire to move in back.
Dr. Paul Flanner, performed by Richard Gere, is grieving the loss of a patient and an off-season guest at the hotel. He is here to talk to the lost patient’s husband. Being alone in the hotel, they alternatively tell each other about their lives and find quite in common. A ravaging hurricane brings them close to take refuge in each others’ arms. The warmth rekindles the love in them. It heals both the souls and brings back the passion for life and happiness.
Adrienne returns home but despite the wishes of her teenage daughter, she does not want to move in back with her husband, while, Paul leaves Rodanthe to go reunite with his estranged son Mark, who lives in Ecuador.
Nights in Rodanthe might not be an exciting drama for younger audiences as the characters belong to the middle-aged group, while, the younger audiences had coddled in the two previous films by Nicholas Sparks. Since, The Notebook (2004) and A Walk to Remember (2002), were based on characters in their teens and twenties, they were greatly liked.
