Use of laser beams in cosmetic surgery


   Science is making fiction possible by laser beam- a painless ray of light which does a numbers of amazing tasks such as making incision, closing blood vessels, vapourizing tumours, treating skin winkles and reducing pigmentation. Research is on to discover more use of lasers in different fields.
All laser surgeries use the method of selective photo-thermolysis, choosing a specific amount and wavelength of laser rays for particular tissue.  There are different types of lasers and each type works in different manner, and is selected for different treatment options. Lasers are used in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of face, eyes, nose and ears. 50 to 60% of cosmetic surgery is done by lasers.
In the beginning, lasers were used for removing port- wine stains, hemangiomas and spider veins, and then its use started for hair removing, photo rejuvenation, removal of winkles and pigmentation, birth marks, freckles and tattoos. For each type of surgery different types of lasers are used and the power has to be adjusted according to skin color.
Lasers are also used to transplant hair, in surgery to stop snoring; it has made its way in eyes surgeries also such as refractive surgeries, retinal surgeries, and glaucoma surgeries. Lasik laser surgery is used for correcting refractive errors of eyes and is safe and effective when done by experienced surgeon and good equipment.
Lasers are widely used in surgical field today.  Its use in surgery is a revolution because of its high precision, quickness and its ability to cut without doing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.
                 However, if lasers are simplifying and giving great help to the field surgery but it  also has harmful effect which cannot be ignored. Certain lasers can temporarily or permanently discolor of a dark skinned person. Some type of laser surgeries are not recommended for pregnant woman, individual suffering from cardio –pulmonary disease and other serious health diseases. If lasers are used imprecisely, they can burn or destroy healthy tissues.
