The destruction of environment continues unabated. There is severe need of protecting and preserving the environment and ecological balance. This menace can be fought against only by creating awareness among the people, rapid deforestation has been the main factor responsible for the degradation of environment. The price of progress has been rather heavy, many forest belts have been cleared away in order set up industrial units and rapid urbanization is swallowing up the remaining forest in places dense forest now we see villages and cities being developing rapidly. The natural habitat of wild animals is disappearing at a very fast rate as the population is growing rapidly and there is a demand of more and more land which is leading to deforestation and is responsible for the extinction of variety of birds and animals. Deforestation on a large scale has led to a disastrous result like famine, floods, and soil erosion has disturbed over all ecological balance.
The need of the hour is to plant more and more trees. Trees bring rainfall and they help in keeping upper soil intact, trees provides oxygen to the atmosphere and trees also play a very important role in controlling air pollution. Our lakes and rivers have become the dumping grounds for industrial wastes, garbage and filth their water is so contaminated that it is no longer fit for human consumption. Our cities are becoming more and more polluted every year. Delhi the capital city of India has earned notoriety for being the fourth most polluted country of the world. The emission of smoke and harmful gases from the factories is not only causing air pollution in fact they have converted the cities into a big gas chambers. Only a concerted effort by all the people of the world can help in maintaining the ecological balance of this planet only then this vast world will become a pleasant and clean place to live in.
